Original picture book artwork by Charles Fuge is available for purchase from Children's Book Illustration.
Charles Fuge was brought up in Bath where a fanatical interest in wildlife translated into the drawing of animals. Once at Camberwell School of Art (where he was tutored by John Lawrence), he went on to win the Macmillan Prize in 1988 for Bush Vark’s First Day Out. This went on to win the Mother Goose Award the following year, and a career in children’s book illustration began.
Charles Fuge has since illustrated nearly fifty picture books including Sometimes I Like to Curl Up in a Ball which was runner-up for the Kate Greenaway Medal 2001.
He now lives in Dorset with his partner Sarah and their 9 year old son Oliver and continues to write and illustrate for children. The book he is currently working on is Who Woke the Baby by Jane Clarke which will be published by Nosy Crow next year.
As well as growing organic vegetables and chairing a local recycling charity, Charles loves making music and plays percussion for a local folk band Mor or Less.
‘Down in the woods in the late evening sun, Big Daddy Rabbit said, Come, Little One!’
‘Let's race and let's chase and let's laugh and let's leap!’
‘So, they raced and they chased and they shouted, Woo-hoo!’
‘They whooped and they swooped and Owl called, Twit-tu-woo!’
‘They played hide-and-seek and found Mouse, Peek-a-boo!’
‘They splashed and they sploshed and then Bear joined in, too!’
‘The last of the sun warmed the big happy crew...’
‘They whirled and they twirled...'til they tumbled and rolled...’
‘Little One suddenly whimpered, Boo-Hoooooo!’
‘I think that it's time for a lullaballoo.’
‘I love you, my Little One, sweet dreams, goodnight.’
